About
the Tour:
Welcome to a tour that is the first of its type in Australia. This is a
tour of films by or made in collaboration with transcultural adoptees
(we use 'transcultural
adoptees' as an umbrella term to cover International, Indigenous,
Transracial and Domestic adoptees whose cultural backgrounds are
different to their adopters). These films will be screened at various
adoptee-run events held in major cities across Australia (and
possibly some overseas locations in the future subject to filmmaker
agreements).
Our Debut:
This tour is a ‘debut’ in various senses. It is the first
adoptee-organised tour of films that focus on transcultural adoptees to
be launched in
Australia. The talents and perspectives of transcultural adoptees are
also
to be found in every facet of this tour: the filmmakers, volunteer
committee members/event co-ordinators and the key editorial team of
event-related publications are all transcultural adoptees. In addition,
most of the
films are making their Australian debut. These new perspectives are all
the more significant because, to date, most commentary on and
representations of trancultural adoption have been made by people who
have not been adopted. In this festival, the adoptee gaze is revealed
and celebrated.
Our Aim:
Our aim is to highlight the new perspectives that mature-aged
transcultural adoptees have on the practice of transcultural adoption.
Whether in documentary form, straight narrative or as experimental
exploration of adoption, each film offers a unique window into what it
is to be adopted across cultures, and very often transracially as well.
The Format:
Each stage of this tour is programmed by an Adoptee Committee. There
are three committees spanning the following geographical areas:
Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, and with Sydney and Adelaide considered
for future tours.
Each committee will create a unique program for its area. Committee
members will select a variety of films for each individual program and
may also produce associated events. The resulting program for each area
may take the form of a one-day film festival, a one-day mixed-cultural
event with artistic performances and panels featuring adoptees, monthly
film nights, etc. Panel sessions held at various events will feature
adoptee guests from a range of professions including adoption
educators, authors, visual and theatre artists, musicians and academic
researchers.
The adoptee filmmakers, committees and speakers' combined countries of
origin of adoption include but are not limited to Ethiopia, Hong Kong,
Korea, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Vietnam. We would also
like to acknowledge the Indigenous traditonal owners of the land we
hold our events.

Info about the 2007 An Asian Australian
Occasion
Film
Festival (AAAO).
The
idea for TTAF followed on from the An
Asian-Australian Occasion Film Festival and Panels event (AAAO) which
was held on 18 May
2007. AAAO was hosted
at the University of Queensland with support from AASRN, School of
Social Science and UQ Library and UQ Equity Office's Diversity Week
Grant Program. The event was convened by Indigo Willing (a
Vietnamese adoptee, founder of
AVI and PhD Candidate at UQ) with
panel chair Prof Jacqueline Low.
The event showcased the following
Asian-Australian films:
.'Delivery Day' and "Footy Legends' by Khoa Do
.'Karaoke King' by Carine Chai
'.Fish Sauce Breath' by Thao Nguyen
.'Chinese Take Away' by Anna Yen,
.Special introduction to the adoption film 'The
Girl in the Mirror'.
Panel speakers at the event included Asian
Australian speakers: Dr Ben Law - journalist, script writer, author and
university lecturer, Alan Han - PhD candidate at UQ, Assoc Prof David
Ip - lecturer, UQ and Anna Yen - writer and star of 'Chinese Take
Away'. The event was organized by a volunteer committee of Asian
Australians and others that included Daniel Tang, Colin Fung, Belle
Uye, Ben Law, Alan
Han, Jessie Wells and Indigo Willing (and with the assistance of many
more who are
listed in AAAO booklet).
Seeing the opportunity to present adoptee-focused films to Australian
audiences, TTAF aims to place the specific
focus on the emerging films made by or in collaboration with
transcultural adoptees from a variety of countries.
